About Pocahontas Music |
To introduce, enhance and expand music education for all students in Pocahontas County, specifically Hillsboro Elementary where music has not been part of the curriculum for many years.
Using a mini-grant from Wal-Mart in 2007, a pilot program introduced the 12 third graders at Pocahontas County's Hillsboro Elementary School to battery-operated rollup keyboards, culminating with a concert of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" in various arrangements, accompanied by a variety of local musicians.
The community response was wonderful, inspiring the support of three community organizations (Snowshoe Foundation; Pocahontas County Arts Council; and Pocahontas County Dramas, Fairs & Festivals), as well as another mini-grant from Wal-Mart, a portion of Board of Education VP Ruth Taylor’s "Do Good Things" grant, and private donations.
Thanks to this generous support, instruction was expanded to include 3rd, 4th and 5th grades for the 2007-08 school year. Having produced and performed a Holiday concert, they are hard at work preparing for their spring performance, entitled "Appalachian Spring."
Hillsboro resident Lucinda Tyler as a volunteer has initiated and coordinated all of the activities from its start-up and fundraising to continuity and publicity.
Hillsboro resident Lois Airgood, classically trained in piano and also a volunteer, has been involved in Pocahontas Music from the start. She not only designed and maintains this web page, which she does professionally, but is also the music instructor.
Procure enough funding to bring music to all children at Hillsboro Elementary School.
Send questions and comments to Lucinda Tyler or Lois Airgood.
